Only Work With the Family

BEMi's core philosophy is to only work with people who ask for support on their own. Thus, BEMi can work with the family on their own development in living with a loved one who has become a shut-in. But BEMi never allows forced interaction with the shut-in, as that would lead to deeper problems and resentment.

Focus on Agency

Agency is the ability to think on your own, decide on your own, and act on your own. This fundamental human need has withered in shut-ins, and the family's actions often are unintentionally interring with natural recovery. BEMi's primary aim is to help the family create space for the shut-in's natural desire for agency to hopefully recover.

No Forced Removals

The only change that is sustainable is change chosen by a person themselves. If a person is forcibly removed from their room, the risk of further trauma and ruined family relationships is extremely high. BEMi never advocates or would support such measures.

Violence, Self-Harm, and Suicide Concerns

There inevitably comes a point where a situation can no longer be handled by the family alone. This includes crisis situations where there is an imminent threat of domestic violence (DV), severe mental illness, self-harm, or suicide—where individuals pose a danger to themselves or their family members.

Each family must judge for themselves whether they are currently in such a dangerous state. BEMi does not provide intervention or crisis resolution support for these types of urgent emergencies. Our support is strictly designed for cases where there is no imminent threat of self-harm, suicide, or violence against the family.

If you are currently facing such a critical emergency, please leave this page immediately and contact the police, medical institutions, or emergency services. Please prioritize the safety of yourself and your family above all else.
